 Illustrator Class 5 All About Stroke:

Assalamualaikum:

welcome to Tech Learning 4U

this our 5th class regarding illustrator

so what we will study in today's class ?

all about stroke i will give you details about stroke

then it will become easy fot you to understand the strokes

so this class will be little but different for you

because we are not making anything today but yes we will make something

but you will learn how to use stroke in today's class

so let see

i made a file for you

here are some boxes ( rectangles)

or squares one thing i want to tell you that

this all are of same sizes

so because of different properties of stroke

this are looking different

so first this path

this is fill and stroke path

generally if we take fill and stroke it will look like this

and if i will select this

then here fill and stroke will be visible to us

and if you want to change then double click here and

pic whatever colour you want to choose, i had told you this things in previous classes

ok

if i

come here and i want to off it's stroke

if i want to off the stroke then i have to select this stroke (that is i have to put this stroke box on top

 position)

and i will do nun from here

then stroke will remove from here

similarly if we want to remove fill the

n i will select fill and then i will press nun form here

then fill will remove from here

ok come to the next this is the fill only path

it don't have any stroke

this symbol indicates that it stroke is off

next we have stroke only

if you select this , this will show that it don't have any fill

which is clearly visible to you that there is no stroke here

one more interesting thing is that

those path who have fill

you can easily select and drag it then it will move

same here in this fill only i am moving it very easily

but this stroke only

if i will move like this it will not move why?

there is no fill here

so we can't hold anything for dragging to move this path

so for moving this you have to click on stroke and then drag it

so click on stroke directly and then drag

next topic you have is stroke allignment

this is align stroke to center

ok where will you see this property? see here in upward position in menu bar

there is stroke option , if you click here then a panel will open

this panel is also available here

this is stroke panel located here

another way is

you can also go to window and i am scrolling down

and here is stoke option just click here

then it will open from here

i am putting this here and i am closing this

one more thing, when i am selecting this,

you can see weight due to it

here weight is 8 points

when you will see here (upward panel of stroke) you can more details than this panel

don't take tension , see this is your fly out button and click on it and

click on show option

then exactly same panel will be visible to you

alright . ok see this

when i selected this , align stroke

here align stroke to center button is showing on here

if i will select this ,

it will show me that align stroke to inside is applicable to this path

and if i will select this ,

it will show me that align stroke to outside is applicable to this path

one more interesting thing is that all the three paths have same sizes

but they all are looking different this is looking smaller ,

this is looking larger and this is looking more larger

because their strokes are aligned in different manner

so remember one thing that the size of you shape will appears different

depending upon the align property

that is inside , outside or align to center

these three property contain difference

third thing is when we will use it ?

when we go further we will learn or easily understand this that when to and how to use it

one more interesting thing is when i will select this and increase it's weight

then see here the size will increase from both the sides (that is inside and outside

and when i will select this

and increase it's weight (same 18 points)

so it will increase from inside

because it is aligned from inside

when i will select this and increase it's weight (18 points)

it will become more larger

because it is aligned from outside

if you will come below

here the topic is joins (corners)

how your corner will look like

this is Miter join by default Miter join is applicable to your shape

equal to this

this is round join, see this ( this is round join)

the difference is when you will apply this

it will show round corner on your shape

it looks better in many places because of smooth corners

in some places it looks better

third is bevel join

it look like this you can say it is cut from edge

remember that these 3 are same strokes

only difference is which type of join we had selected

ok see if i will select these 3 together then

it will not show any active join in the panel

because these all are different from each other

if i will select this then it will be show press

and if i will select this then it will be show press

and if i will select this then it will be show press

next you have dashed line

you can change any stroke in to dashed line

if you remove check from here

see when i removed the check from here the dashes disappeared

if i will on this then dash will come again

how much gap you need ? you can give your value from here

for example i gave 4 points

then it will show 4 points dash

by default gap will come depending upon the value

you gave on it

but if you want some different then you can give more value in this gapes

i mean you can give 2 points gap here

and next also 2 points and then again 2 points

then it will show you dot dash dot dash

interesting line is made and

you can apply it on any path to convert it like this

this thing is known as doted line and

for doted line one thing remember that your weight must be equal

to the dashed point then it will show dot line

for example if i will make it's weight one point then

it will look like dash not dot . why ?

because my dash is 2 points and the weight is 1 point

so one point weight need one point dash

then it will look like dot line

so you can convert any path like this

next you have open paths and

it's end point or cap

what is cap

the place where you line close , you can see this visual

here your butt cap is on

this have round cap

third one we have projecting cap

what is projecting cap ?

it is same as like previous one

only difference is that it will close little near the closing path

i mean stroke will close near to the closing path

always remember that these three have same sizes

but only for the caps these all are looking different

lastly

you have some arrows

how to add arrows ?Simply here is the arrow option

one is for starting and other is for ending

see this it has both start and end arrow

how to use it ?

for example let me make some path

ok let us make with pentool , this is our path

correct and

i started from here and then i selected it

i started from here so this is my starting point

i want this on my starting point

and in end i want this arrow

then it will show this easily that is it will give me this arrows easily

ok if you want to make these arrows little bit smaller

then you can do this by changing their values

i am giving 50 % value

and in this place i am giving 50 % value

this is your all path settings

ok

one more thing

see this arrow , now

the place where your path is ending

is the same place your arrow is also ending

if you want to make it little forward then

press this button and

see this your arrow is now little forward

i hope change it because this one is looking strange

this is also better

anyways remember one thing

it will end on that place where you path ends

your arrow will end here and

if you want to end your arrow before

means this will on the end of path

and this will beyond the end of path

so ahh see this

i am taking solid arrow it will come towards outside

next thing is that

here are some line segment which you know that

i don't want to disturb this

i am coming directly into the brush

paint brush, ok remember that paint brush is

also a stroke

it is little bit different and we will see this in details when we will make our own custom brushes

ahh

i am taking a new file and

let me use something to make you understand

see

the special thing about this brush is that it is working very thick

simply take your brush

click and drag

you can make your drawings very easily

inside this brush you have bob brush

but before it i want to tell more about this paint brush

whenever you will draw anything with it

so remember that when you will change it's colour

so you have to change the stoke's colour

this is not fill this is stroke

so change the colour of stroke

this will change your brush's colour

if you selected any colour then it will show that the same brush colour

and you can change it's colour also

for example i selected green

now when i am doing this

it is showing me green strokes

one more important thing you have one panel known as

brush panel

so if you open this that is brushes

and look it carefully you have

you have different brushes which are default brushes here

don't worry we will see how to make our own custom brushes in details

but i will not tell you about this today,

but today i will tell you how to use it

i mean how to use this

one more thing this brushes which are visible to you

is easily applicable to your any path

for example even i made any line with my pen tool

and i want to apply this

then simply click on it it is done see this

as we are talking only about strokes

so let me tell you how many ways we can get this strokes

inside the brush there is also one tool that is

bob brush, i am telling you about this because

i want to tell you about the difference of both

paint brush is your stroke and

bob brush is your fill

see whatever i made is showing as fill

there is no colour on the stroke

remember that you can increase your brush

and you can also decrease your brush size, there is one shortcut of it

you have square brackets in your keyboard near to P key

if i will press right square bracket see this

my brush will increase

so and

we will discuss later that what we will make with this

now just know it how to use these stuffs

ahh

why

what is difference between our normal paint brush and bob brush ?

so remember that bob brush always give you fill

means you had made a shape with this

if i will swap like this then

it will show us stroke

ok remember that bob brush is not stroke

it is fill

this will give you a shape and paint brush was our stroke

ok if you take default brush it will show like this

why we are disusing this things

because our next tool is pencil tool

i will tell you about shaper tool

but first see pencil tool

pen tool is same as brush tool

but the difference is

this is plane and thin line

it will not give live result of brush

if you want to see live brush

then you have to use brush tool only

pencil tool is nothing but it's a stroke free

i mean you can make freehand strokes

inside this pencil tools there are also some tools example

smooth tools , path eraser tool

this are also very helpful for your works

for example i made a line with pencil tool ,

let me make some rough line

ok look it carefully

if you want to make it smooth

or a sharp corner comes like so

and you want to make it smooth

so you can make it smooth by smooth tools

one more thing remember that

this tool will not only work in only pencil tool

even if you made anything

with pentool and

it is made very rough

let me make more rough

ok

and i want to make it smooth

so take your smooth tool and

move it by pressing your mouse over it

it will give smooth results

if you do it more then it will give you more smoothness

if you do it more then it will give you more smoothness

and good result of smoothness

because many times we need this

whatever we are making sometimes

we need to make it smooth so we use this tool in our works

it is helpful( smooth tool)

lastly we have path eraser , remember that it erases path only

ok

path eraser means it will give you open path by erasing it

see these are different parts

so if we have closed shape

for example i made a square

and i take my path eraser tool

and i move here by pressing mouse left click

remember that my cursor was looking like this

because my caps lock was on at that time by mistake

if you caps lock will on then your all cursor

or brushes will look precise

for example when you will take pencil tool it will not look like pencil

it will show plus sign

ahn

if i will take pen tool and my capslock will on then it will show cross

don't panic because of these

why my cursor changed ? always check your cursor is on or off

so make your caps lock off and

your cursor will again normal

alright we are talking about path eraser

path eraser work is that it only erase path

see this parts are separated

alright next is

your have

shaper tool

this is a new tool

this is new in cc

i mean this tool is added in adobe illustrator cc

it is little bit interesting

if you want to make some shape quickly

for example if you want to make triangle then make it free handed

it will give you a perfect rectangle

if i want to make rectangle

if i want to make circle

i did this and see this

it will give you shapes very easily

ah

we use it sometimes

sometimes we make some things

and we don't want any tools so we use this tools to make shapes when we do our work in very speed mode

so for that things it is very useful for us

if we will make open path

then it will say that i don't understand what is this

this is only for shape

shape is that which have close path

if i will make this type of oval

then it will give you oval shape

ok

next my favorite is join tool

you can use this tool more

i mean you can use it during tracing

let see

i am making a path from my pen tool

i am closing it's fill

remember that these 3 paths are open paths

when i am making this i pressed control so i can get my selection tool while doing my work with any tool

when i click out side this path don't disturb me

so remember that these 3 are different curves

join tool. what is the work of it?

joint tool joints this overlapping path

if will select these both and

i will move my mouse while pressing left click of mouse

simply i selected them and then i will move my mouse while pressing left click of mouse like this

again i selected them and then i will move my mouse while pressing left click of mouse like this

this is now a complete shape in front of us

here you don't need to do average and join

here simple corner is coming

you can do curve if you want

you can make shapes very interestingly

see i am making paths with my brush

you had seen a while ago that was path eraser tool

so this is a simple line

yes you can use it no problem

if you have any closed shape

for erasing this you can use eraser

but see what happens

when i erase this eraser will erase it but it will give close shape path

so if you use this eraser on any shape

for example like this or like this

this will erase

this are now different parts

but remember that it will give you close shape or close path

i am

putting in default colours

so we can select it easily

i took eraser and did like this and this ...

see this it is very interesting thing

you can erase and make new shapes with it

you can do it free handed

so what is the difference between

path eraser

and

our normal eraser

it will remain open

and if erased this like this

it will give you close shape

this is a difference between them

sometimes we erase for open paths

why we want that ?

for example i erased this by path eraser and i diid like this and i want to add arrows here

we had seen earlier that we can add arrows on strokes

simply put your arrows from here

and

but this thing is not applicable in this , i cant do it here

since this path is closed

but yes you can

by direct selection you can select this , they are larger numbers so

i pressed shift and selected them and then delete

now this path is open

it is more better, it was more easy

so i said you the difference about

both erasers i mean path and normal eraser

it is used to erase shape

but it will give you close shape

next is scissors

scissors is again only for path

it will not give you shape after cutting it

if you click and drag it will give error always

please use your scissor tool on a segment

or in an anchor point

but

not an end point of a path

it will not work on end point

it will work on between of some path

for example if i will click

then it will give a separate path

move it

and i selected this again and i used scissor tool

i clicked here and remember this arrows is coming because we added this features in our paths

so if you want to remove it

simply

come here

and do nun to remove this

ok

also same thing from here

so arrow will remove

last you have knife tool

knife tool is also similar to eraser

see i want to tell you some difference between eraser and knife tool

i am doing it little bit side

now i don't need this

now

if i

if eraser it by eraser tool then it will give me two shapes

but a gap will come

which is same in size as my eraser size

you can change size of eraser same as like we did during the use of bob brush

by pressing left side square bracket i am making it small

if will take knife tool from here

so whats the work of it ?

it will also cut, it is not erasing it is cuting

it will also give you shape in close way

so if will deselect this see this is a different shape and this is another different shape

but both are sitting closely with each other

ok and

it is very interesting tool sometimes we need to remove some shape from somethings

for example i cut like this

i am selecting this

and giving it different fill

sorry i mean i am giving it different fill

this is very interesting thing

you can also cut more here in these shape

and one more interesting this if you don't select this

then also it will cut this

whatever shape you want you can change it's colour
